Why Do I Want to Have an Affirmation for Self-Love Party?

.

How do you find a way to start loving yourself and your body? With a party, of course!

We need to take care of not only our physical health but also our mental health. As women, the temptation to gossip and point out flaws in those around us is strong, especially with other women. We’ve all been there where we look at one of our peers and immediately begin comparing ourselves.

It’s normal and natural to compare and then cut down the other woman, either in our mind or commonly, to the other women we call friends, to feel better about ourselves. There is no judgment in this statement because I’ve done it. However, I am not proud of it. Cutting others down doesn’t make me feel better but instead makes me feel like a bad friend. Then I wonder what those people may be saying about me when I’m not listening. Yuck!

Girls, I tell you, all these negative emotions are ugly. They steal our confidence, destroy trust, and make me feel so much worse about myself when I get caught up in the nasty talk of the moment. “Did you see Shelley’s hair? Yikes. That color, though!” or “I don’t know what she was thinking with those pants! Seriously – she’s put on weight, and I feel so embarrassed for her.” Or how about, “I don’t know why she lets her kid do that. I would NEVER allow that. I mean, come on!” We can all admit we’ve been there. I’m not alone here in admitting I’ve said and done these things.

One of the Best Self Care Ideas is Therapy!

But a few years ago, when I began going to therapy and taking a deep look at my insecurities, I began to make some changes in this area. I know I’ll never get it just right. I mean, I’m a work in progress. But I am making concentrated efforts to do better in loving myself and others. As Oprah says, “When we know better, we do better,” and this party is a perfect way to get started doing better.

What is an Affirmation for Self Love Party Anyway?

An affirmation for a self-love party is all about learning to love ourselves. When we can begin to love ourselves, flaws and all, we can love others better. And the world needs more love, especially between women! An excellent way to show more love is to learn to love ourselves.

Self-love not only makes a significant impact on our own daily life, but it also makes a huge difference in the lives of our friends and family. Learning to love yourself will allow you to share positivity in a meaningful way. And we all feel better when we’re having a party, right? Some introverts may argue with this but stick with me, introvert friend! Even YOU may like this great idea for a fun party!

This party is a perfect way to treat yourself and your friends to a good time and leave them feeling better about themselves and each other! The fun activities and foods are all centered around things related to kindness to yourself and each other. You will spend time learning how to be kind to yourself, and then you get to help each other find what they love about themselves, too! There’s nothing quite as rewarding as a party that encourages positive thoughts and personal growth, and helps you love yourself! That’s my kind of personal development!

Who Should I Invite?

Although it is tempting to invite everyone you love to this fantastic event, it’s a good idea to keep your party small and intimate. Because you’ll be talking about personal issues such as personality traits and body image, you’ll want the friends you invite to feel comfortable with one another. A smaller group allows that sort of intimate conversation. Six women seem to be the magical number for this kind of party. And that’s usually a great number to fit around your table! Of course, it never hurts to have a few people in mind to fill the gaps if someone can’t join you.

A Self Love Affirmation party is an excellent opportunity for moms and daughters to have some quality time together and begin having conversations about self-image, body image, and the importance of daily self-love and self-care. If you have teenage daughters or friends with teenage daughters, think about inviting them. It’s never too early to start having these crucial conversations.

What Do I Serve for Refreshments?

The first thing on the list for a party is usually food! So what do you serve? You can either encourage healthy eating by serving healthy foods, such as fresh fruits and veggies with a good lean protein like mini sandwiches or quiche, or you can go wild and serve junk food! A simple way to take some of the burdens off of the work of hosting is to invite your friends to bring their favorite snacks to share. Voila! Minimal prep with everyone contributing!

At my party, we indulged in all of the favorite foods that we usually avoid. Bring on the chocolate and donuts! Since we chose to have our party as a Saturday brunch, we had donuts, cinnamon rolls, bagels with decadently flavored cream cheeses, and lots of chocolate candies! It was delicious, and we deserved a morning to feel very spoiled!

Next, invite your guests to wear their favorite neglected workout gear or comfy clothes—no comparison or fashion show here. Wearing fun and relaxing clothing is a fun way to chill and relax together. I don’t know about you, but I always have great intentions to work out in super cute outfits, and I have a super cute outfit for this purpose tucked away in my closet. It gathers dust and shame, so this is a good reason to drag that activewear out, dust it off, and look cute in it with no pressure to perform! Next up, fill your diffuser with some amazing soothing essential oils to set the mood.

How do I Entertain My Friends?

Start With This Movie

After all of my guests have arrived and filled a plate full of food and a mimosa or cup of coffee, we found a comfy spot to watch a movie! And boy – do I have the PERFECT film for the occasion! Have you heard of Taryn Brumfitt? Don’t worry – I hadn’t either. But I sure know her now! Taryn is a frontrunner in the body image movement and does a fantastic job teaching women how to practice self-love. The movie is available on Amazon, and trust me when I tell you – you WANT to watch this movie!

You can read all about Taryn’s Body Image Movement HERE.

In the movie, Taryn tells her story of how she learned to love herself, not despite her body, but because of it. She also interviews many women who talk about their battles with self-love. The movie is eye-opening, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but always thought-provoking. I guarantee you will feel differently about your body after watching it!

GRANDMA DISCLAIMER: Because there are some photos of adult subject matter surrounding women’s bodies and the discussion accompanying those photos, I recommend you preview the movie first if you’re inviting young teens to your party. If necessary, you can always zoom past a particular section of the film, but best to be aware before catching a mom off guard.

If you fall in love with Taryn and Embrace like I did, check out a good book written by Taryn. She’s amazing on screen and writes the best books!

Next up – A Self Care Party Craft

What are affirmations and do they work? You bet they work! And with this fun craft, your friends are guaranteed to take some of the love and joy home with them. When the movie is over, invite your friends to refill those plates, freshen up their drinks, and then move to a table or an area where you can do this fun craft project! I call it Self Love in a Jar! Your friends will naturally chat about what they just saw in the movie, so they’ll be ready to dish out the love to themselves and the rest of the gang.

Here are the materials you’ll need for this self care party craft:

Small glass container – 1 per person. I repurposed Oui glass yogurt jars for our party, but you can also use a simple jar like this one!

Love stickers – hearts, flowers, faces, anything cheerful and centered around positivity

Popsicle sticks (also called Craft Sticks)

Fine Sharpie Markers

Scraps of Decorative Ribbon

This craft is simple and so much fun! Begin by handing out jars to all of your guests. Let them decorate their containers however they’d like using the stickers and ribbons. Then when everyone is ready for the next step, give everyone a small pile of craft sticks. Have them write positive affirmations on a few sticks to remind them to practice self-love when needed. Coach them to get specific and think about words that will impact their daily lives. Here are some great examples.

“One of the best things about you is your (fill in the blank)”
“My smile is bright and cheerful.”
“I am kind and giving.”
“I am an amazing singer.”

You can also use some love quotes, such as:

Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we’ll ever do.”
– Brené Brown
“Never bend your head. Always hold it high. Look the world straight in the face.”
– Helen Keller
“You have been criticizing yourself for years, and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens.”
– Louise L. Hay

Let Your Guests Take it From Here!

As the women get into the spirit of the event, have them take turns writing on craft sticks and handing them to the other women. Again – it’s excellent to use specific words meant for each person. At my party, I listened to other women’s comments about their areas of insecurity.

For example, for the friend who finds her butt too large, I wrote, “you have gorgeous curves,” and for the woman who said her face is horse-shaped, I wrote, “Your slender face is beautiful and elegant.” Sometimes we need to speak directly into our insecurities to erase them, a little bit at a time. I am insecure about my nose’s size and shape, and a friend who knows this wrote for me, “your face is unique and beautiful, and when I see you, I smile!” Some days that is exactly what I need to hear!

When you are ready to wrap up your handiwork, encourage your guests to take a few extra craft sticks with them to continue to write a few positive affirmations to themselves in the upcoming days and weeks. Remind them (and yourself) of the importance of good self-care and encourage them to put their affirmation jar somewhere in their home where they will see it and be able to use it when they’re having a rough day. Or any day. There is no wrong time to review the positive feelings about yourself and those your friends share with you.

Wrapping Up Your Self Care Party

Think back to the beginning of this article. Remember how easy it is to cut others down to make ourselves feel better. It’s not a pretty habit, but if we’re being honest, I think we can all admit to doing it at one time or another. One way to break a bad habit is to replace it with newer, healthier ones. So go ahead and build your friends up. Find things about them that you love, and don’t be afraid to tell them.

This self care party is a great way to turn over a positive new leaf and practice kindness to yourself and others around you. Since I have begun to love myself and accept myself flaws and all, it became fun to share that with my friends. Self-love is so powerful and is deeply connected to your self-esteem and sense of self-worth!

The women at my party had a great time and filled my home with laughter, joy, and so much fun! Since the party, I have followed up with some of the ladies who attended, and they still have their love affirmations jars, and they still use them! Know that by throwing this party, you are making a positive impact!
