About once a year, I make the long trek from Michigan to one of our Southern states to attend one of my favorite travel creator conferences. That means I get the joy of driving through Southernmost Illinois, and somewhere along the way, this stretch of rolling countryside worked its way right into my heart.
After hours of highway hum, the scenic Shawnee National Forest appears like a little miracle with its switchbacks, rock formations, and quiet two-lane roads. Add in beauties like the Bald Knob Cross and Metropolis, home of my favorite hero, Superman, and you can see why this Hip Grandma keeps coming back.

Quirky Stops Along the I-70 Stretch of Southern Illinois
Southern Illinois doesn’t wait until you reach the deep South to bring the charm. Right along I-70, you’ll find a whole lineup of quirky roadside surprises worth tapping the brakes for. Pack a sunscreen stick if you’re traveling during sunny weather – all this hopping in and out of the car for selfies can lead to a powerful (and surprise) burn.
World’s Largest Catsup Bottle – Collinsville
This towering red beauty stands proudly beside the old Brooks Catsup factory, looking exactly like a condiment bottle that wandered away from a picnic. Thank goodness there were no scale-sized picnic ants! This beauty is big, bold, and wonderfully odd. And, it’s just a short drive of only 25 minutes from downtown St. Louis, the perfect quick side trip after you visit the Arch!

Pink Elephant Antique Mall – Livingston
The giant pink elephant out front is only the beginning. Inside this giant gift shop, you’ll find aisles of antiques, quirky collectibles, and plenty of things you never knew you needed. Every corner has a surprise waiting.
I love supporting local businesses, especially when they’re in small towns like this one. And if you’re shopping for the grandkids, this is the perfect place to pick up just the right trinket! If you’re like me, you’ll want a crossbody bag that keeps everything secure and out of the way. My favorite Baggallini has been on every road trip with me.

Henry’s Rabbit Ranch – Staunton
Henry’s Rabbit Ranch is part Route 66 memorabilia stop and part quirky compact car-themed wonderland. You’ll find half-buried Volkswagon Rabbits in the same style as the Cadillac Ranch. Equally quirky, less expensive!

America’s 2nd Largest Cross – Effingham
This towering landmark reaches nearly 200 feet into the sky and stands at the crossroads of two major interstates. On a clear day, you can spot it long before you arrive. I always feel myself exhale a little as it comes into view. This is a great spot to stop and rest for a minute while enjoying the stunning views.

Giant Miller Lite Beer Can – Altamont
Some roadside attractions have great meaning. Some teach us about history. And some just make ya scratch your head and wonder why. Those are my favorites. I mean, consider this giant beer can, and wonder with me… why? And then grab your selfie.

Yard Art – Brownstown
Blink, and you might drive past it, but this ever-changing display of handmade art is worth slowing down for. You’ll find colorful pieces tucked into the grass like someone turned the whole yard into a joyful open-air gallery.

Big Buffalo and Teepee – St. Elmo
This big buffalo and cement teepee duo sits in the parking lot of Driftstone Pueblo along Route 40. After you’ve snapped your selfies, head into the shop with over 8,000 square feet of shopping wonder in The Midwest’s Largest Native American and Gem Superstore. Something about this whole experience it just feels like a childhood road trip memory.

Gateway Arch Replica – Vandalia
This arch may be smaller than the real thing, but it certainly catches your eye! Find it near the Old State Capitol in Vandalia. It’s eerily fun to see this mini replica of its giant St. Louis cousin.

Kaskaskia Dragon – Vandalia
Hold onto your hats for this one. The Kaskaskia Dragon really does breathe fire when you feed it a special token. You can pick up a token at the liquor store next door, then step back and let the magic happen. Legend has it that photos are especially cool at night. The first time I visited was in windy conditions during midday sun, so my next visit will be by dark. And trust me, if you’re stopping during the day, bring a pair of over-the-top sunglasses that fit right over your regular glasses. Clearly, I didn’t – check out that squint!

The Southernmost Stop of All: Metropolis, Home of Superman
Metropolis doesn’t just lean into the Superman theme; it embraces it with both arms and a bright red cape. This southernmost Illinois town is chock full of hero-sized fun, and it all starts with one iconic stop. But before you channel your inner hero, make sure your phone is ready for action by tossing a portable charger in your bag. Mine has saved more roadside selfies than I can count.
Superman Statue – Metropolis
In the heart of town, this towering Superman stands proudly in front of the Super Museum. Strike your boldest hero pose because the Man of Steel is ready for his close-up with you.

A Teeny Tease: Bald Knob Cross of Peace
If you’re already exploring Southern Illinois, you absolutely cannot miss the stunning Bald Knob Cross of Peace in Alto Pass. This breathtaking landmark rises above the bluffs with panoramic views of the scenic Shawnee National Forest. Fair warning – it does get chilly in the rolling Southern Illinois countryside, so don’t forget to pack your cozy hoodie (this one from 7-degrees is my favorite) for those chilly mornings and evenings.
More Attractions in Southern Illinois for Curious Travelers
Southern Illinois is home to dozens of state parks, so you’re never far from a trail, a scenic overlook, or a peaceful place to stretch your legs. If you have extra time on your trip, consider exploring the dramatic rock formations and miles of trails at Garden of the Gods or the colorful shops along the Makanda Boardwalk in Makanda IL
Wine lovers can sample the region along the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, including my visit to one of its most beautiful stops, Blue Sky Vineyard and several others for wine tasting in the heart of Southern Illinois. Beer fan? Stop for a taste of one of many creative brews at Scratch Brewing Company. History buff? Take a wander through Fort Massac State Park to check out the reconstructed 18th-century fort along the Ohio River Scenic Byway. Into nature? Little Grassy Lake offers peaceful water views and plenty of space to enjoy the great outdoors.
If you are an outdoor enthusiast, you’ll love Giant City State Park with its sandstone cliffs, wooded trails, and the popular Giant City Nature Trail, along with plenty of outdoor activities like horseback riding through the scenic woods at Giant City Stables. After you’ve worked up an appetite, head to the Giant City Lodge for a comforting, home-style meal that feels like the perfect reward for a day outside. A day at Giant City State Park is the perfect place to enjoy Southern Illinois’ outdoor recreation.
And while you’re in the area, I would not be doing my job if I didn’t tell you about the Cahokia Mounds.
Cahokia Mounds – Collinsville
Not exactly a roadside attraction, but absolutely worth your time. Cahokia Mounds is on the National Register of Historic Places and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sweeping views from the top of Monk’s Mound and the exhibits that bring the ancient Mississippian culture to life make this one of the most meaningful stops in the region.
Note that it’s just a quick hop away from the Catsup Bottle, so you can enjoy some deep and meaningful local history with a little quirky fun in one easy stop. Learn more about Cahokia’s history through the National Park Service.
