Things to do in Central Indiana weren’t on my radar for a long time. As a Michigan girl, I treated Indiana like the state you drive through on the way to somewhere else. Turns out, that mindset did me no favors.

Once I finally stopped my Jeep and began exploring, Central Indiana surprised me, and I’m clearly not alone. If you know me, you know I’ve had plenty of conversations with other recent visitors as I travel.
Turns out this part of the Hoosier State wins for culture, charm, and breathing room, but without huge crowds or chaos. Think walkable towns, welcoming locals, and enough fresh air to remind you that travel doesn’t have to be exhausting. Even trips that start or end in downtown Indianapolis (the heart of Central Indiana) feel more relaxed when you branch out into the smaller towns nearby.
If you’re over 50 and prefer an Indiana road trip that values comfort, curiosity, and a sense of humor over hustle, this might be the perfect place to start. What Central Indiana Feels Like
Central Indiana feels… “easy” in the best possible way. This region is chock full of green spaces, access to the great outdoors, friendly hellos, and towns where you can park once, walk a little, and actually enjoy yourself without a plan. I love that you won’t have to rush or fight crowds. You can slow down and look around for the next easy surprise. Just be sure to pack your favorite walking shoes and a crossbody bag (my favorite Baggalini Bag is perfect) to keep your necessities handy.
Central Indiana feels familiar, even if it’s your first visit. You’ll find a comfortable mix of history, local pride, and quiet, everyday moments. It’s not complicated, but it’s meaningful. For travelers who value breathing room over bragging rights, this part of the state gets it right.
Who Central Indiana Is Good For
Central Indiana is a great fit for over-50 travelers who like easy drives, comfortable pacing, and destinations that don’t require a spreadsheet to enjoy. It’s especially welcoming to solo travelers, couples, and friends looking for time to engage in conversation and explore walkable towns. I love the low-stress exploring that is a hallmark of this area of the Midwest. If you prefer meaningful stops over packed schedules, you’ll feel right at home here.
Regional Highlights
Rather than trying to cover every corner of Central Indiana, from Hamilton County north of downtown Indianapolis to quieter small towns farther out, these are the places where I’ve spent time exploring, lingering, and coming back for more, with plenty of chances for outdoor fun along the way.
Madison County (Including Anderson)
Madison County feels like the heart of my Central Indiana travels. It’s the place I keep coming back to when I want a mix of the comforts of home and something surprising. From small-town main street stretches to meaningful historic sites, this area has a grounded, lived-in feel that makes exploring easy and unhurried. It’s a great place to slow down, poke around local shops, and get a sense of everyday life in the Midwest. The city of Anderson adds another layer, with community spaces, local pride, and pockets of history that reflect the region’s roots going back to the early 1900s. Madison County also delivers when it comes to food, with great eats like Catello’s Italian Art Cuisine in nearby Pendleton, which is part of the Indiana Foodways Alliance’s “Italian Trail.” A meal there feels like part of the experience, not an afterthought. Altogether, the area strikes a perfect balance of low-key exploring, friendly conversations, and places that feel real, not curated for tourists.
Delaware County (Muncie)
Delaware County is part of East Central Indiana, and it surprised me in the best way! I especially loved the fantastic city of Muncie. This historic town has a creative, slightly scrappy energy that rewards curiosity, whether you’re checking out the local steakhouse, painting your very own Bob Ross masterpiece, or exploring Minnetrista. While wandering around Muncie, I learned its name comes from Munsee Town, a Lenape settlement that existed long before the city took shape, which gave the place even more depth for me.
Muncie also does everyday pleasures well. You’ll find local restaurants, walkable areas, and just enough buzz to keep things interesting without tipping into overwhelm. It’s a great way to experience Central Indiana if you enjoy destinations that feel lived-in and quietly confident rather than built to impress. Ready to see more? One of my favorite connections between Muncie and Fairmount comes from Garfield himself. Jim Davis, the creator of the famously grumpy cat, grew up on a small farm in Fairmount and later attended Ball State University. Knowing that made the short drive between the two feel less like a hop on the map and more like a shared story rooted in creativity, small-town life, and Central Indiana pride.
Grant County (Fairmount & the Garfield Trail)
Central Indiana slows down even more in Grant County, especially in the small town of Fairmount. It’s quiet, easy to miss if you’re in a hurry, and precisely the kind of place that makes you want to stop and explore. Modest streets and meaningful historic sites connect the past and present without much fanfare, making it a great spot to linger and reflect.
Grant County also surprised me with a playful twist thanks to the Garfield Trail. Cleverly placed statues taller than me are scattered through Marion and nearby towns. Each one has its own personality, and they make marvelous selfies! It’s lighthearted, a little quirky, and a fun reminder that this region knows how to mix nostalgia with unique experiences.
Fairmount is best known as the hometown of James Dean, and I loved exploring all of the connections in Explore James Dean’s Roots: Fairmount Indiana’s 7 Top Things to See and Do, but what stayed with me was the reflective feel of the town itself. It’s thoughtful, unpretentious, and quietly moving, a reminder that some of the most memorable stops aren’t about how much there is to do, but how a place makes you feel.
Quirky & Unexpected Stops in Central Indiana
Central Indiana has a playful side, even beyond Garfield, especially if you love a unique experience that gives you something to talk about. The World’s Largest Ball of Paint is exactly what it sounds like, and somehow it’s even better in person, while Oinking Acres Pig Sanctuary in Hendricks County offers a hands-on farm visit that’s equal parts charming and memorable.

Food and festivals are where Central Indiana really shows its personality, especially during seasonal special events that bring towns together. I mean, who doesn’t love a good state fair? I had never been to one myself, but after my first visit to the Indiana State Fair, I’m officially a convert. Between the food, the people-watching, and the sheer joy of it all, it’s easy to see why it’s such a beloved tradition.
But even if you miss the fair, this region knows how to gather people together. Many of these festivals and gatherings shine during the warmer months, when people linger longer, music drifts through town squares, and conversations come easily.
