Fairfield may not be the biggest of Iowa towns, but it’s a small town with a big heart! You will find her nestled in the rolling hills of southeast Iowa, about a 2-hour drive southeast of Des Moines, the capital and the largest major city in Iowa, or about an hour from Iowa City.
As a travel writer, small towns that catch the public’s attention always pique my interest. Fairfield frequently appears on lists of top small towns in America. Embrace Fairfield’s Unique Vibe
Fairfield is more than just a collection of fascinating attractions. It’s a place that surprises visitors with its unique character. It is known for embracing Transcendental Meditation, and a large community practices this technique. Don’t be surprised to see students strolling around in traditional Indian attire, as it’s also home to the Maharishi International University, a renowned institution focused on consciousness-based education.
Sustainability ranks very high on the list of core values for most residents of Fairfield, and you will find evidence of it throughout the community. From the Fairfield Loop Trail to the ROAP, you will have a whole new appreciation for the focus on nature in “TITLE WITH LINK.”
Explore the Shops of Downtown

Central Park is the center of the downtown area and provides a square green area that is alive and active. Around the square, you’ll find a variety of specialty and local shops, such as clothing stores, art galleries, a jewelry store with items made by regional artists, and gift boutiques, each with its own unique character. This focus on shopping locally adds to the character of Fairfield. I found something incredibly charming about wandering from shop to shop and engaging in friendly conversations.
The Farmers’ Market was up and running during my visit and was my first introduction to Fairfield. I immediately felt the warmth of the community. Children’s Storytime was underway in the gazebo in the center of the park and tables stocked with local produce and baked goods were laid out around the gazebo.
I enjoyed watching several couples and families walking around the park. I even posed for a photo with the Coop statue, depicting William Henry Coop, the first pioneer settler born in Jefferson County in 1836. Fairfield arts are alive and thriving; from the Coop Statue to the Fairfield Arts Convention Center and the Fairfield Art Immersion House, you will find everything, including movies, quirky attractions, annual events, and celebrations highlighting the performing arts. Fairfield First Fridays
If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Fairfield on the first Friday of the month, you’re in for a treat. For over 20 years, Fairfield First Fridays has become a beloved community tradition that celebrates creativity, diverse culture, and connection. When you visit Fairfield, participating in a Fairfield First Friday is a beautiful way to experience a different side of the city while supporting the arts. With its wide range of attractions, this event promises something for everyone.
Each month brings a different theme, live music, and delicious food. It’s a festive evening of mingling with locals, exploring galleries and shops, and enjoying the lively atmosphere. Head to the downtown Square each first Friday to see what’s happening!
Take Time Out for the Johnny Clock Museum

If you’re looking for something unique, you cannot miss the Johnny Clock Museum. This small, local museum is behind Pat McClain’s home, just a stone’s throw down the road in Lockridge. Pat’s husband, John, spent a lifetime carving treasures of all shapes and sizes. Although almost all of his work centers around clocks, large and small, the true treasure is the handiwork itself.
You see, John had dyslexia at a time when dyslexia was not well-known or understood. As he struggled with school and the written word, he needed an outlet for his creativity, so he began carving. He never used drawn-out plans but instead tapped into his imagination and vision to create truly unique works of art.
The clock museum represents hundreds of thousands of hours of work. John passed away in 2018, so his wife, Pat, now leads the tours around her husband’s extensive collection of work and shares the story of each clock, its inspiration, and the details of what woods John used from around the world. Admission is reasonable at under $10 per adult and only a few for children, and it is worth every penny.

Maharishi International University

The Maharishi International University (MIU) is a major player in Fairfield’s landscape. MIU has a fascinating history and a unique approach to education. The university was founded and established in 1973 by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (you may know him as the Yogi to the Beatles) to offer Consciousness-Based Education, integrating traditional academic disciplines with the practice of Transcendental Meditation (TM).
The University campus was previously home to Parsons College, a liberal arts college from 1875 to 1973. Parsons College closed its doors due to financial difficulties, declining enrollment, and accreditation issues. The campus remained empty briefly before Maharishi International University (MIU) took over later in 1973. It is now the only university of its kind in the country.
One thing you won’t miss when you’re in the area is the Golden Domes, two large structures where students and faculty gather to practice Transcendental Meditation. These domes symbolize the university’s commitment to fostering inner peace and enlightenment by providing a space for group meditation. Because this daily practice is meant for students and graduates of MIU, the public is not invited to participate. Nevertheless, the domes are unique and provide excellent photo opportunities.
Maharishi Vedic Observatory

If you’re looking for an attraction that will tap into your curiosity and maybe trigger a bit of healthy skepticism, add the Maharishi Vedic Observatory to your list. You’ll find this open-air observatory on the Maharishi International University campus. But what is it, you ask? Great question! This installation is a series of large, precise instruments designed and based on ancient Vedic principles. These instruments, or “yantras,” are used to study the movement of the stars, planets, and other celestial bodies and their influence on our planet.
It feels like a big, open park with tools made of stone that look much like sundials. These tools help observers understand the movements of the sun, planets, and stars. The tools have been used by ancient cultures all over the world. You can find similar ancient observatories at places like Stonehenge in England and Machu Picchu in Peru.
When you visit the Vedic Observatory, it’s like looking at the sky the way people did long ago. According to Vedic principles, the yantras help today’s people learn about the universe and how everything connects, including your mind and body.
Visitors are welcome to wander the structures at the old Vedic observatory but are asked to refrain from touching or climbing on them. Although each structure has a small placard showing its name, very little information is provided about what each yantra does. If you want to prepare for what you’ll see in advance, you can search YouTube for a video walkthrough of the structures and their purposes.
Once you’ve finished wandering through the Vedic Observatory, consider a walk through nearby Jefferson County Park, where you will find all the nature you could ask for. Maharishi Vedic City

As long as you’re in the area of the observatory, you will want to take the opportunity to drive through the streets of Maharishi Vedic City. This area is one of the most unique places I’ve seen in my travels. This little neighborhood is a bit of a hidden gem and an interesting sustainable living model. Residents have designed the community according to Vedic architecture and philosophy principles.
The MIU founded the city in 2001. The layout and architecture of the city are intended to promote health, happiness, and harmony with nature and may look quite different than what you would see in your home neighborhood. Here are some of the design elements to watch for:
Orientation: Homes are aligned so that the entry faces East to ensure they receive optimal natural light and energy.
Kalesh: The Kalash is a small, dome-like structure (like a cupola) placed at the highest point of a building to enhance the positive energy and harmony of the home, symbolizing a connection to higher consciousness and the universe.
Brahmasthan: Each building has a central, silent space known as Brahmasthan, believed to connect the inhabitants to the universal consciousness. This area is kept free of obstruction to maintain a sense of openness and peace.

The cook’s use of fresh ingredients and traditional spices means you will enjoy a rich and authentic dining experience. The best part? You will likely get to try something you’ve never eaten before!
