How to Experience the Rich History and Culture of Dubois County IN: A Visitor’s Guide

One thing I have learned about destinations in the Midwest is that you should never underestimate a community, especially when it comes to our varied tapestry of American History. Every small town I visit has its own flavor of history and culture, and DuBois County in Southern Indiana is no different!

Let’s dive into some fantastic historical experiences you can have when visiting DuBois County!

Monastery Immaculate Conception

Dubois County IN is rich in Catholic history, and a visit here wouldn’t be complete without exploring some of its spiritual landmarks. Start with the Monastery Immaculate Conception, fondly known as “The Castle on the Hill.”

This architectural marvel offers a glimpse into the serene life of the Benedictine sisters, who have dedicated themselves to prayer and community service. The monastery’s stunning architecture, peaceful gardens, and welcoming atmosphere provide a perfect setting for reflection and tranquility.

Jasper City Mill

Step back in time at the working, historic Jasper City Mill. This working grist mill is a nod to the town’s early days and its reliance on agriculture. Wander inside the mill to learn about the milling process and view historical exhibits. You can even purchase freshly ground flour to take home!

The mill not only offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the ingenuity and hard work that built the community, but it is also just plain fun to watch. It is nestled on the bank of the Patoka River and sits right next to a stop on the Jasper River Walk.

Historic League Stadium

The Historic League Stadium was a wonderful and quirky surprise! I’m not a big baseball fan, but I sure did love learning a little about the local sports history here. Known for its role in the movie “A League of Their Own,” starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, and Madonna (all well-known and loved by this over-50 Hip Grandma), this stadium transports you back to the golden era of baseball.

The stadium was initially built in 1894 and then renovated and expanded in 1991 for use in the making of the movie. Take a tour of the stadium, where you can spot many details from the film, like the plywood advertisements along the fence line or the dugout where Tom Hanks’ character says the famous line, “There’s no crying in baseball!”. Or, if baseball is your thing, visit when you can take in a Dubois County Bomber game.  That is the perfect time to relish the history that echoes through the grandstands. And don’t forget to stop out front and snap a selfie with the Rockford Peaches bus!

St. Joseph Catholic Church

Over in Jasper, don’t miss the Saint Joseph Catholic Church, a magnificent church building that is a testament to the community’s faith and dedication. The church body, or Parish, was established in 1837 in Dubois County IN. The present church began construction in 1867 and was renovated recently in 2021.

The church’s grand design and intricate stained glass windows are gorgeous. We wandered through the church, taking photographs and admiring the pews, the stations of the cross, the pipe organ, and the altar, which had scaffolding surrounding it to touch up the gorgeous mosaics inlaid high above.

You are always welcome to attend mass at St. Joseph. Whether attending a service or simply admiring the architecture, this church offers a feeling of peace and connection with the community’s deep-rooted spiritual heritage. The bell tower alone is worth a look. And it’s hard to miss as it towers 235 feet from the ground. Initially erected in 1904 in the style of London’s Big Ben, the tower has stood as a symbol for Jasper, marking this community’s deep faith and heritage.

Spirit of Jasper Historic Train

Begin with a ride on the Spirit of Jasper Train, a beautifully restored vintage train that takes you on a scenic journey through Southern Indiana’s landscapes. It’s a perfect way to unwind and watch the land roll by while listening to the gentle sound of the click-clack of the trail wheels.

Don’t miss a Ride & Dine experience, where you can enjoy a meal in climate-controlled comfort while you clack down the rails throughout Dubois County IN. Choose from a standard dining experience, the Pizza & Beer ride, or the Chocolate & Wine ride. We didn’t get to ride the train while visiting, but we did get a peek inside, and these train cars are beautifully restored! I can’t wait for my next trip to Jasper, which will most definitely include a dining ride.

One of the most popular experiences on the Spirit of Jasper is the Polar Express Ride, which takes you on a round-trip journey through the Hoosier National Forest in a festive, Christmas-themed ride, complete with hot chocolate, cookies, dancing chefs, and a reading of The Polar Expres by Chris Van Allsburg. Kids will love the experience and leave with their own sleigh bell to remember their experience visiting the North Pole!
