Y’all know I love the arts. Anyone with pink hair must be artsy. Of course! And the Fairfield Art scene is exactly what I love! Every corner you turn, you’ll find art galleries, studios, and creative spaces showcasing a remarkable array of talent.

And, of course, there’s a fully stocked art store in the downtown square for any of your art needs! Around town, you’ll find local artists’ work alongside nationally recognized names, making it easy to get wrapped up in Fairfield’s arts.

Visit the ICON Gallery

Your exploration of Fairfield’s art scene must include a visit to the ICON Gallery . Located in a renovated historic building on North Main Street, this gallery showcases contemporary art emphasizing craft, design, and fine art. Rotating exhibits featuring temporary exhibitions, a solo exhibition, or one of several special exhibitions keep things fresh, so even if you’ve been before, you’re bound to encounter something new and exciting. 

Experience the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center

As the heartbeat of the performing arts in Fairfield, the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center (FACC) has something for everyone, and I mean that. They host live music, theatrical productions, and dance performances. When you visit in the summer months, take note of the FREE summer Outdoor Concert Series. Everyone loves free, especially while vacationing! 

A large part of the FACC is The Stephen Sondheim Center. This theater seats 552 guests and hosts various performances, including occasional classic film viewings (think E.T. or The Land Before Time). This space is also available for weddings, meetings, or a corporate event.

The Wege Center for the Arts

The Wege Gallery opened in 2021 as Maharishi University’s main art exhibition space. Managed by the MIU Art Department, it showcases 4-5 art shows annually featuring artists from around the U.S., including students and faculty. Located at the Wege Center for the Arts, the gallery is vital in promoting visual arts and fostering critical thinking through its exhibitions. It’s a place where visitors can explore diverse artworks and learn about different artistic styles. DGM Pottery

Fairfield is home to the Deep Green Machine Pottery Studio, where you can take a hands-on pottery class and learn how to throw a pot on a pottery wheel. It’s your Ghost experience (Hip Grandma movie reference), although you’ll need to bring your sweetheart for the whole experience.

Artist and instructor Jessi Tucci will take you through the basics of creating your one-of-a-kind work of art on the wheel. She teaches everything from smacking your clay into a potato, centering it on the wheel, power driving it with the throttle, and even squeezing the clay into its final form. Trust me when I tell you that you WILL love this class. And you will get clay on you, so dress appropriately for the fun! The staff did dig up an apron for me when I showed up in a far too dressy top for the fun!

Experience the Unexpected at Fairfield’s Immersive Art Fun House

702 South 5th Street, Fairfield, IA

Local artist Tom Lassota dedicated 20 years to transforming his home into a whimsical, glowing installation lovingly referred to by locals as “the mushroom house.” This offbeat attraction, officially known as the Fairfield Immersive Art Fun House, epitomizes Fairfield’s quirky side, a blend of creativity, sustainability, and architectural ingenuity that embodies the town’s out-of-the-box thinking.

Mr. Lassota began this unique project by raising his home’s ceiling 6 feet to house his distinctive art.  One step into his home, and you’ll immediately feel like you’ve stepped into Alice’s Wonderland or something similar. Neon installations spin around you, and Tom will happily tell you about the items he used to create this incredible spectacle. This attention to sustainability is very much a part of the lifestyle in Fairfield. As I wandered the two stories of moving art, I couldn’t help but notice the many old-school handsets from the phones of my youth mounted here, there, and everywhere. We also found bike wheels, insulating foam, toys, and other discarded items recreated into faces and paint-splattered oddities. This private collection is a favorite, and I’ve seen many private collections in my travels. Who knew some acrylic paint, leftover pieces and parts mixed with a man’s need for a creative outlet could create such an incredible display?

One thing is for sure – a visit to the Art House will leave you with a sense of wonder, confusion, and joy.
