Bread at Brick Oven Bakery
One of the newest additions to the landscape in Bismarck is the Brick Oven Bakery. I love finding great bakeries, and this one definitely made my list! Owners Steve and Sandy Jacobson opened shop in 2019. After weathering the storms of Covid, they are thriving today. A quick stop in, and you’ll soon find that this is no fast food joint.
Come in the morning and order a cup of coffee and a breakfast pastry made from the highest-quality ingredients, or come on in for lunch and enjoy a soup, sandwich, or salad served up with some fresh-baked love.

And the beer isn’t the only thing to enjoy at the Craftcade. No gaming session would be complete without some delicious food. The menu features everything from beloved bar staples like nachos and wings to more innovative options, including artisanal pizzas. But what truly makes this place stand out is its collection of vintage arcade games – most of which are set up for free play. So whether you want to relive childhood memories or make new ones with family members (yes, they welcome under-18s on Sundays), rest assured, knowing no quarters will run dry here.
If free-standing vintage games aren’t your bag, belly up to the bar, where you’ll find all the video game consoles up and running and ready for play! Oh! And don’t forget to take a turn at the boxing machine located up front, which is the big hit of the Craftcade!

Have a Flavorful Experience at Pirogue Grille
The Pirogue Grille in Bismarck, North Dakota, is one of my favorite fine-dining restaurants in the area. The Pirogue has fantastic dining options for those looking for a unique and flavorful experience. Chef Stuart Tracy and his wife and business partner Cheryl opened this amazing restaurant in 2005. Their attention to detail doesn’t end at the menu, either, although it is stunning in and of itself!

The name Pirogue comes from the French word for a dugout canoe, and the interior of the restaurant is well-suited to this imagery. The walls are tastefully bedecked in works from local artists. We sat in a private dining area with works from Paul Noot, who also created several giant murals through the Bismarck-Mandan area. The tables are covered in white linens and then covered with white butcher paper.
Midwest State Park Adventures makes a great travel companion or gift. Some of the best travel writers in the Midwest collaborated to put this book together, which covers 12 Midwest States and hundreds of state parks.
And I, the Hip Grandma, wrote contributed by writing the Michigan chapter!

When questioned about the paper, Chef said the paper on the tables inspires guests to draw, write, and create their own art while savoring their cocktail and their experience. In fact, restaurant staff has rescued a few pieces of art from the paper table covers and framed them for display.

The Unique Pirogue Grille Menu
Once you get past the ambiance, you’ll love the unique and seasonal menu, comprised of dishes using locally-sourced ingredients, including Bison medallions, which is what I chose. Bison isn’t widely served over here in Michigan!
Seafood lovers will delight in the ample selection of dishes to suit those tastes, and you must certainly not leave until you’ve had a bite of one of their signature desserts, which are created with seasonal and local ingredients!
A visit to Pirogue Grille is always the place to have a great experience with great service and delicious local cuisine.

Feel La Bella Vita at Anima Cucina
Anima Cucina in Italian or Soul Kitchen in English – either way, this little wine bar, brick oven pizzeria and trattoria located in the heart of downtown Bismarck delivers a powerful punch!
I had the pleasure of a breakfast visit at this Italian eatery, where I indulged in an amazing bowl of yogurt made in-house with granola on top. I ordered my signature Chai Tea Latte and Wowza! I had a hard time focusing on anything other than the food right in front of me, which can be tricky for a travel writer.

Anima Cucina’s warm and inviting atmosphere, complete with brick walls, creates the perfect setting for a memorable meal, whether it is a breakfast like mine or a lunch out on the outdoor patio, or a romantic dinner paired with a perfect glass of wine. The menu at Anima Cucina features a variety of traditional Italian dishes prepared with fresh and high-quality ingredients.
From homemade pasta to wood-fired pizzas made in a third-generation brick oven, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Those with a Vegan preference will dine happily here, and even vegan cheese is available! The attentive and friendly staff adds to the overall dining experience, making Anima Cucina a must-visit restaurant in Bismarck.
Owner Kenny Howard shared with us during our visit that although Anima Cucina has only been in operation for about five years as of 2023, their sister restaurant Fireflower, also located in Bismarck, has been wowing the locals for over 11 years.

A Taste of Germany at LUFT
Ready for a culinary journey to Germany without leaving Bismarck? Set your sights on LUFT. This eatery is steeped in authenticity, serving up traditional German food that echoes the flavors of Deutschland.
The menu at LUFT reflects diverse regional influences from across Germany. You’ll find robust offerings like bratwurst and pretzels alongside sauerkraut and schnitzel – there’s truly something to satisfy every palate. No German dining experience would be complete without beer, right? At LUFT, you can expect an impressive array of imported beers straight from Germany, along with local craft brews that are perfect companions for their hearty meals.
An Authentic Atmosphere
If you haven’t picked up the signals yet, let me assure you that a dining experience at LUFT isn’t just about eating; it’s an immersive cultural experience. The decor mirrors the rustic charm found within many traditional German taverns, providing a cozy setting ideal for sharing good food and conversation among friends, family members, or whoever you choose to dine with.
Let the Guinness Flow at the Blarney Stone Irish Pub
A journey into the heart of Ireland is just a visit away with Blarney Stone Irish Pub. This enchanting establishment, housed in a historic building in Bismarck (one of many), delivers an authentic menu filled with traditional dishes and drinks from the Emerald Isle.
Irish-Inspired Menu and Drink Offerings
The cuisine at Blarney Stone comes alive through recipes handed down over generations. The Shepherd’s Pie, brimming with tender lamb beneath a blanket of velvety mashed potatoes, never fails to delight patrons. Seafood enthusiasts are in for a treat, too – Dublin-style fish and chips is always in high demand. Of course, one can never go wrong with a plate of Bangers and Mash, and the Blarney Stone did not disappoint!
Take note that my dining companions, who choose to eat Vegan, had a difficult time finding the perfect dish. They did try the Cauliflower chicken on a salad and kindly shared a taste with me. I was pleasantly surprised at how yummy this veggie treat was!
No trip to an Irish pub would be complete without delving into their beverage list. With imported beers like Guinness Stout flowing freely from their taps alongside Jameson Whiskey flights that cater to every palate, there’s something here for everyone who appreciates fine beverages.

Pub Decor and Outdoor Dining Room
Crossing the threshold of the Blarney Stone Pub feels akin to entering a quaint tavern nestled within Dublin’s winding streets – all thanks to its charming decor adorned with vintage memorabilia. Their open-air dining room, outfitted with giant garage doors that open to let the outside in, offers diners the chance to savor delicious food under North Dakota’s radiant skies during pleasant weather conditions.
The staff members at this cozy pub exude warmth reminiscent of true Irish hospitality, which adds another layer of authenticity to your experience here. What sets it apart, though, is live music performances by local bands, making dining more than just about good food but also great entertainment.
