The Grand Scheme:  Snatching Sinatra

“Hosted and narrated by John Stamos, The Grand Scheme: Snatching Sinatra is a complicated, nuanced story of one imperfect man trying to redeem himself by pulling off the perfect crime. Did you ever feel like everything’s broken, and it’s your job to fix it? That’s how Barry Keenan was feeling back in 1963. He was broke, unemployed, hooked on booze and pills, and his family was falling apart. Barry needed a miracle. And against all odds, he got one. One day the voice of God came over the radio in Barry’s car and told him there was a simple solution to all his problems: all he had to do was kidnap Frank Sinatra, Jr. For the first time ever, Barry Keenan shares his version of the bizarre story in his own words, from beginning to end.”

HIP GRANDMA SAYS:  Although this is a limited production with just ten episodes, who doesn’t love listening to John Stamos as he tells the story of the 1963 kidnapping of Frank Sinatra Jr?  Thank goodness we are gaining awareness of mental illness in today’s world.  Perhaps this never would have happened had Barry Keenan been diagnosed and under treatment.

Podcasts for True Crime Lovers

True crime podcasts are all the rage these days and for good reason. They’re captivating, informative, and can be downright chilling. If you’re a fan of the genre or just looking for something new to listen to, check out our list of the best true crime podcasts. These podcasts cover various cases, from unsolved mysteries to notorious serial killers.  So, whether you’re a true crime junkie or just dipping your toes into the genre, there’s something for everyone on this list.

Dateline NBC

Current and classic episodes, featuring compelling true-crime mysteries, powerful documentaries and in-depth investigations.

20/20

“Unforgettable true crime mysteries, exclusive newsmaker interviews, hard-hitting investigative reports, and in-depth coverage of high profile stories.”

HIP GRANDMA SAYS:  If you like watching Dateline or 20/20, you’ll love these podcasts, where they take the audio from each TV episode and turn it into a podcast.  Yup.  All the fun of the episode with no bother of watching it on tv!

Murder With My Husband

A true crime podcast that ventures into the darkest crimes with a wife who loves it and a husband who hates it.

My Favorite Murder

“Lifelong fans of true crime stories Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark tell each other their favorite tales of murder and hear hometown crime stories from friends and fans.”

Dirty John

“Debra Newell is a successful interior designer. She meets John Meehan, a handsome man who seems to check all the boxes: attentive, available, just back from a year in Iraq with Doctors Without Borders. But her family doesn’t like John, and they get entangled in an increasingly complex web of love, deception, forgiveness, denial, and ultimately, survival. Reported and hosted by Christopher Goffard from the L.A. Times.”

The Thing About Pam

“Two days after Christmas, 2011, Russ Faria came home from game night to find his wife, Betsy, dead. He was soon charged and convicted of her murder. But Russ Faria insisted he did not kill his wife. Betsy’s brutal murder set off a chain of events that would leave one man dead, another man implicated, and expose a diabolical scheme. It would also see Dateline NBC—the true-crime original—become a part of the never-ending saga that proves the old adage: Truth is stranger than fiction. This original series from Keith Morrison and Dateline defies all expectations.”

HIP GRANDMA SAYS:  Both Dirty John and The Thing About Pam are limited episodes and are a couple of years old, but they are still worth a listen.  These podcasts were so popular that they were made into series on Netflix.  Listen to the podcasts first, and then enjoy the shows!  I loved them both!

Morbid

“It’s a lighthearted nightmare in here, weirdos! Morbid is a true crime, creepy history and all things spooky podcast hosted by an autopsy technician and a hairstylist. Join us for a heavy dose of research with a dash of comedy thrown in for flavor.”

Chasing Cosby

“For nearly half a century, Bill Cosby brought warmth and laughter into hearts across the country, cementing his image as “America’s Dad.” But he also led a dark, secret life preying on women. The comedian carefully coaxed each one into feeling safe and cared for, then left them to pick up the pieces of their lives. It all started with Andrea Constand. She carried the burden of being the only one of the 60-plus accusers whose case could be tried in a court of law. Now, she’s telling her side of the story, along with firsthand accounts from more than a dozen survivors, jurors and prosecutors. From the Los Angeles Times, and hosted by investigative reporter Nicki Weisensee Egan, “Chasing Cosby” is the definitive take of the rise and fall of Bill Cosby.”

HIP GRANDMA SAYS:  I sure didn’t want to believe that America’s dad, the very man I grew up watching every Thursday evening, was guilty of these crimes.  But once I listened to this series, sticking my head in the sand was no longer an option.  Listen with caution.  If you are a Cosby fan, you likely won’t be after hearing this.

Affirmative Murder

“Affirmative Murder is the true crime comedy podcast hosted by Alvin Williams and Francel Evans. Each week they swap murder stories from marginalized communities, while trying not to rant about anything from fast food, to what is actually buried in graveyards…Follow them as they shed a light on the darker side of true crime, pun intended.”

The Girl in the Blue Mustang

“When 18-year-old Michelle O’Keefe is found murdered in her shiny new blue Mustang in a California park and ride, investigators encounter a confusing crime scene and a witness who seems to know too much. In Dateline’s latest original podcast series, Keith Morrison takes us to the High Desert outside Los Angeles for a story featuring twists, turns and a sharp-eyed Dateline viewer who steers the case in an entirely new direction.”

Gone South

“Starting in the sixties, a loose-knit confederation of traveling criminals known as the Dixie Mafia terrorized every state from Georgia to Oklahoma. Its hundreds of members, unofficially headquartered in Biloxi, Mississippi, specialized in scams, heists and murder. Their alleged leader — the estranged son of a prominent Oklahoma politician — was a skilled and charismatic outlaw named Kirksey Nix.

When Nix was sentenced to life in prison at Angola for a murder he committed in New Orleans, the Dixie Mafia was thought to be extinct. But fifteen years later, a sitting criminal court judge named Vincent Sherry and his wife Margaret, a mayoral candidate for the city of Biloxi, were assassinated. As the case ran cold, authorities were forced to confront a disturbing reality: the Dixie Mafia was not done yet.”

National Park After Dark

“Hosted by two friends who share a passion for the outdoors and a fascination with what can go wrong there, National Park After Dark is a podcast for the morbid outdoor enthusiast. Tales of death, dark history and tragic events is what NPAD is about, but through the darkness – is light. National Parks have storied histories including epic survivals, inspiring humans and serve as physical reminders of the importance for protecting the planet. Time to lace up those hiking boots and take a walk into the wild. Welcome, to National Park After Dark.”
