14 Quirky Things to Do in Gulf Shores and Alabama’s Beaches

When most people picture Alabama’s Beaches and Gulf Shores, they imagine sugar-white sand, turquoise water, and long afternoons on the beach.  I did too.

But somewhere between photographing a giant woman rising from the bay, wandering through a full-size Stonehenge replica, and spotting dinosaurs tucked into the trees beside a marina, I realized this stretch of Alabama’s best beaches offers far more than sunshine and seashells.

I’ve visited Alabama’s Beaches twice now.  One trip was all about relaxing, and the next trip included glamping among the trees.  Both trips reminded me that some of the best memories happen when you venture just a few miles beyond the shoreline.

If you’re the kind of traveler who loves discovering places that make you smile, laugh, or ask, “Wait…what is THAT?” then you may just be my new best friend…  But even more important? These quirky stops deserve a spot on your itinerary.

Barber Marina

If you only have time for one off-the-beaten-path stop during your visit, make it Barber Marina.

From the road, it looks like an ordinary marina.  But once you pull in, you’ll quickly realize you’ve stumbled into one of the quirkiest roadside art collections in the South.  Around nearly every corner is another oversized sculpture, unexpected surprise, or photo opportunity.

It feels a little like someone decided to turn an ordinary marina into an outdoor art playground, and I’m so glad they did.

Bamahenge

Yes, Alabama has its own Stonehenge.

Built at full scale by artist Mark Cline, Bamahenge recreates England’s famous monument using fiberglass instead of massive stones.  Walking among the towering replicas is surprisingly impressive.  If you’ve never made it to the original, this is a pretty fun alternative.

I couldn’t stop smiling the first time I rounded the corner and saw it standing there.

Dinosaurs, Knights & More

Just when you think you’ve seen everything, dinosaurs appear.

And medieval knights.

And even a giant spider.

The sculptures are scattered throughout the property, making Barber Marina feel more like a treasure hunt than a roadside stop.  Kids may love it, but honestly, I probably had just as much fun wandering around to see what I could discover next.

But my favorite quirky site was still to come… I looked out toward the water and spotted one of the marina’s most iconic works of art.

Lady in the Bay

This giant woman emerging from the water has to be one of the most unusual and yes, quirky, sites I’ve encountered.

Known as the Lady in the Bay, she appears to be peacefully rising from Wolf Bay, creating one of the most photographed scenes at Barber Marina.  She’s graceful, unexpected, and somehow perfectly at home surrounded by boats and wildlife.

The marina was quiet when I visited, but her presence made me feel like I was in very good company.

Neptune Fountain

Keep exploring, and you’ll eventually meet Neptune himself.

Perched atop this gorgeous fountain and towering over visitors with his trident in hand, the sea god seems right at home watching over the marina.  Between Neptune, the Lady in the Bay, Bamahenge, and the rest, Barber Marina offers enough quirky discoveries to keep you wandering much longer than you planned.

Once you’ve had some exploring the truly quirky, know that Alabama’s Beaches also preserves stories from the past. Just down the road, Fort Morgan offers a chance to step into more than 200 years of Gulf Coast history.

Historic Fort Morgan

Fort Morgan protected Mobile Bay for nearly two centuries and played an important role during the Civil War.  Today, visitors can walk the brick corridors, climb the fortifications, and enjoy sweeping views of the Gulf and Mobile Bay.

History buffs will appreciate the stories behind the fort.  Photographers and nature enthusiasts will love the contrast between weathered brick, blue water, and wide-open skies.  And parents will love the family-friendly space, with plenty to keep busy kids occupied.

Fort Morgan is a completely different experience from the beach, and well worth the short drive.

From there, I headed back toward Gulf Shores.

The beach was calling again, but there were still a few more unexpected discoveries waiting for me…

Interactive Experiences

Some of the best memories aren’t made by simply looking at an attraction. They’re made by rolling up your sleeves, trying something new, or getting a little closer to the action.

Sand Castle University

If you’ve ever looked at an incredible sand sculpture and thought, I wish I knew how to do that, you’re in luck.

Sand Castle University offers hands-on lessons where you’ll learn the techniques professional sand sculptors use to create those towering beach masterpieces.  No artistic experience is required, and you’ll leave with plenty of laughs, sandy hands, and a new appreciation for what can be created with a bucket of sand.

Even better? Your new master sculptor will meet you at just about any main public beach in the area. With miles of beaches to choose from, this experience is convenient and perfect for the whole family!

Whether you’re traveling with kids, your spouse, or a group of friends, this is one of those experiences you’ll be talking about long after your vacation ends.

The Hot Shop at the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach

Watching molten glass become art is fascinating, but making your own piece is even better.  I created a colorful glass flower with the help of the friendly artists, and since it needed a day to cool, they carefully shipped it home for me.  While you’re there, take time to browse the small art gallery featuring works by local and regional artists.

Prefer your hands-on experiences to involve furry or feathered friends?  The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo has you covered.

Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

If you’re an animal lover, don’t miss the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo.

Known for its up-close animal encounters, the zoo gives visitors the chance to feed giraffes, meet sloths, and see hundreds of exotic animals from around the world.  It’s beautifully landscaped, easy to explore, and just the right size to spend a relaxing morning or afternoon.

Even if you’ve visited larger zoos, this one has a friendly, personal feel that makes it worth a stop.

Whether you’re shaping soft white sand into epic castles, crafting glass, or coming face-to-face with incredible animals, these interactive experiences are some of the most memorable ways to enjoy Alabama’s Beaches.

Where to Eat

Let’s be honest.

Half the fun of traveling is discovering great places to eat.

Fortunately, Alabama’s Beaches will not leave you disappointed.

Sunliner Diner

Walking into Sunliner Diner feels like stepping back into the 1950s.

From the chrome accents and colorful booths to the jukebox atmosphere, the restaurant is fun from top to bottom.  Their burgers, hand-spun milkshakes, and all-day breakfast make it an easy recommendation, especially if you love a little nostalgia with your meal.

But if a step back in time isn’t your scene, or if you’re looking for a completely different vibe, Gulf Shores has plenty of options.

The Hangout

Want a little live music and some fun energy? You’ll find it here.

The Hangout is one of Gulf Shores’ most iconic restaurants, combining classic American foods like burgers and fries with live entertainment, beach vibes, games, and plenty of family-friendly fun.  It’s lively, colorful, and exactly the kind of place you’d expect to find at a popular beach destination. And you might even find the perfect spot to take your new favorite selfie!

If tropical cocktails and beach vibes are more your style, here’s a fun stop you’ll want to add to your list…

Tacky Jacks

Sometimes it’s the view along with the quirk that makes a meal memorable.

Tacky Jacks sits right on the water, making it a perfect place to enjoy seafood while watching boats drift by.  The casual atmosphere fits Gulf Shores perfectly, and breakfast here is every bit as popular as lunch or dinner. I love the many, many unique and fun touches that make Tacky Jacks, well, tacky… and they start before you even enter the door!

And when you’re ready for that mid-afternoon filler, Alabama’s Beaches has plenty of options for a sweet snack.

Mythic Beach Banana Bar

This one surprised me.

The Mythic Beach Banana Bar isn’t your typical beach bar.  Instead of tropical drinks, it offers frozen snacks, perfect for a break from the fun on a hot, sandy beach. It’s colorful, creative, and full of personality.  I mean – where else can you choose from a frozen banana, frozen cheesecake, or frozen ice cream sandwich covered in chocolate and all things delicious! I mean – any dessert that includes a banana must be healthy, right? The pure fun of this place perfectly matches the fun spirit of Alabama’s Beaches.

When you’re craving breakfast or brunch, take a look at another local favorite that’s well worth the stop.

Ruby Slipper

If breakfast is your favorite meal, don’t skip Ruby Slipper.

Known for creative Southern-inspired breakfast dishes and incredible eggs Benedict, it’s the kind of place where you’ll probably end up saying, “I wish we had one of these back home.”

And if you’re celebrating a special evening or just want a memorable meal with a view, don’t miss this next spot.

Cobalt

For elevated waterfront dining with beautiful views, Cobalt is hard to beat.

Watching boats glide by while enjoying fresh seafood makes for a relaxing evening, especially if you time your visit near sunset.  It’s a wonderful way to slow down after a busy day of exploring. I mean – check out this amazing mac-n-cheese. Seriously, one of the best I’ve had!

No matter what you’re craving, Alabama’s Beaches offers a dining scene that’s as varied as its attractions.

Where I Stayed

One of the things I love about Alabama’s Beaches is that you can choose the kind of getaway you want.

I’ve experienced two completely different styles of lodging, and I’d happily recommend both. If unique accommodations are part of your travel style, you might also enjoy my stay at a treehouse glamping retreat in Alabama, another unforgettable way to experience the state.

The Lodge at Gulf State Park

On my first visit, I stayed at The Lodge at Gulf State Park.

The location couldn’t be better.  You’re just steps from the beach, and many of the rooms offer beautiful Gulf views.  I especially loved that I could start my morning with a walk along the shoreline before heading out to explore more quirky attractions.

It’s a great choice if waking up to the sound of the waves is high on your gulf shores vacation wish list.

Timberline Glamping

If you enjoy being surrounded by nature without giving up modern comforts, Timberline Glamping is a wonderful option.

My cozy (and sturdy) tent sat surrounded by trees and included a bike for exploring.  Mornings there started with the sound of birds singing instead of alarm clocks.  It felt peaceful and relaxing, and was just far enough away from the crowds while still being close to everything I wanted to explore.  And yep, you can even lock it!

My favorite part was being able to park my car right out front for easy access to loading and unloading.

It was the perfect home base for a solo adventure.

Plan Your Alabama’s Beaches Adventure

Whether you’re planning a long weekend or an entire week, Alabama’s Beaches has so much more than “just” beautiful beaches. Before you go, be sure to visit the official Visit Alabama’s Beaches website for current events, seasonal festivals, beach conditions, and visitor information.

From giant roadside art and historic forts to unique dining and unforgettable photo opportunities, I’m betting you’re gonna love this destination as much as I do.

Find the Perfect Place to Stay

While The Lodge at Gulf State Park and Timberline Glamping are two of my favorite places to stay, you’ll find plenty of other great accommodations throughout Alabama’s Beaches. This map will help you compare hotels, condos, vacation rentals, and more.

Final Thoughts

When I planned my first trip to Alabama’s Beaches, I expected sunshine, seafood, and plenty of time on the sand.

I found all of those things.

But the moments I still talk about are the ones I never saw coming. There’s just something inherintly unique about standing beneath a full-size Stonehenge replica, finding dinosaurs beside a marina, watching a giant woman emerge from the bay, and discovering that some of the best meals came from places I’d never heard of before arriving.

Those are the moments that transformed a beach vacation into an adventure.

So yes, pack the beach towel.

But leave a little room in your itinerary for the unexpected.

Some of Alabama’s Beaches’ most memorable discoveries are waiting just beyond the shoreline.

Alabama has surprised me more than once. If you’re planning to explore beyond the coast, I’ve also shared my favorite experiences in Huntsville (including the US Space and Rocket Center) and Tuscaloosa, with more Alabama adventures on the way.
