No Tuscaloosa Restaurant breakfast list would be complete without including Waysider. This fantastic breakfast destination has both history and heart, making it a Tuscaloosa must-visit. Not only is it beloved by locals, but it also holds a special place in college football history as the favorite breakfast joint of Coach Bear Bryant. You can even pose with
The restaurant has been serving up delicious, homey breakfasts since the 1950s, and trust me, the food lives up to its legacy. The biscuits here are some of the best I’ve ever had—fluffy, warm, and served in a big ole basket with your choice of apple butter, honey, and good old-fashioned butter. I’m a biscuits-and-honey girl myself, but that apple butter was too tempting to resist, so I had to try it. Let me tell you, it was the perfect addition. Whether you’re a regular or a first-timer, you’ll understand why the Waysider has remained a local favorite for decades.

Big Bad Breakfast
Big Bad Breakfast in Tuscaloosa quickly became one of my favorite breakfast spots, and I’ll bet it will be one of yours, too. The bright and sunny atmosphere has a cheerful vibe and an impressively clean space that makes you want to settle in and stay a while. Their menu is packed with hearty Southern classics, and basic breakfast fare is also well-represented for those who love the classics.
What really caught my attention was their ham powder—yes, ham powder! I had to ask my server about this fascinating menu item. And turns out it’s just what you’d expect. Ham Powder is made from dehydrated and ground ham, and they sprinkle it on all kinds of dishes. I tried it on my eggs, and wow, it added this smoky, salty kick that took breakfast to a whole new level. If you’re looking for a spot that serves up delicious comfort food with a unique twist, Big Bad Breakfast is definitely worth a visit!

River Tuscaloosa
If you visit on a weekend, you will love the elevated brunch experience at River. I enjoyed brunch with my travel companions while in Tuscaloosa, and it lived up to the hype! But while brunch is a fantastic weekend treat, River is more than just a Saturday and Sunday brunch spot. They’re open from 10 AM to 1 PM for brunch but also serve up a fabulous dinner experience, available Tuesday through Saturday starting at 5 PM.
Their dinner menu has something for everyone, from perfectly cooked steaks and fresh oysters to crisp salads and tasty flatbreads, all crafted by a southern chef who knows just how to bring out bold flavors in a beautiful presentation.
The best part? Sitting out on their spacious patio, soaking in the gorgeous view of the river and the Riverwalk while sipping on a signature cocktail. It’s the perfect spot to relax, enjoy the fresh air, and enjoy a satisfying meal.
Located just a short distance from downtown Tuscaloosa and the local college campus, River makes it easy to pop in for a bite or stay a little longer for after-dinner drinks and dessert. River offers an authentic taste of the South made with fresh, local ingredients. Trust me—you’ll be glad you came!

City Café
The City of Northport is located on the north side of the Black Warrior River across from the City of Tuscaloosa. It is packed full of charm and cozy appeal. And City Café is the perfect complement. You’ll recognize and appreciate the down-home values and excellent service as soon as you enter!
I went early in the day and enjoyed a classic breakfast. But, this place serves up delicious meals any time, from hearty breakfasts to their famous meat-and-three plates. If you’re unfamiliar with a meat-and-three, it’s a true Southern tradition—think one main protein like fried chicken, pork chops, or country-fried steak, served with your choice of three generous sides. And trust me, with options like creamy mac and cheese, collard greens, and buttery mashed potatoes, picking just three is no easy task!
City Cafe is only a short walk from the Kentuck Center for the Arts, making it super convenient whether you’re out exploring or just looking for a quick, satisfying meal. The atmosphere is simple and down-to-earth, with friendly service and prices that can’t be beaten. If you’re in the area and want an authentic taste of Southern cooking, this little spot in Northport should be at the top of your list!

Tuscaloosa Restaurants with Luscious Lunches
Rolf’s German Restaurant
When I walked into Rolf’s German Restaurant, I knew I was about to experience something special. If you’re a regular reader, you probably know I have some pretty heavy Dutch roots. But, like most other Americans, I am a bit of a melting pot. My German roots run pretty deep as well. And it turns out I LOVE German food. Who knew!? And Rolf’s is the perfect place to make a new favorite.
Rolf himself is not only the brilliant man behind the delicious dishes coming out of the kitchen, but he also plays a mean squeeze box—yes, he’ll serenade you with his accordion if you’re lucky! His passion for authentic German cuisine shines through, partly because he uses fresh, local ingredients, like mushrooms from Underground Forest, a supplier who grows mushrooms in a location under the streets of Tuscaloosa!
The mushrooms are incredible and add a rich, earthy flavor to many of Rolf’s dishes. If you love good German food, trust me, Rolf won’t disappoint. I recommend the Spaetzle, a traditional German egg noodle that’s soft, buttery, and perfectly comforting. Whether craving schnitzel, bratwurst, or just a hearty plate of noodles, Rolf and his food will warm your heart and fill your belly.

Decades Pub & Grub
Another option just a couple of doors down is Decades Pub & Grub. This lively restaurant and bar celebrates the music and memories of the past decades, and you’ll find that energy reflected in everything from the décor to the menu.
They specialize in amazing sandwiches and salads; these aren’t your ordinary lunch dishes. They are photo-worthy, huge, and crazy delicious! I ordered a half Greek salad, which was fresh, flavorful, and oh-so-satisfying, and I can honestly say their Cuban sandwich is one of the best I’ve had—packed with all the best flavors.
The atmosphere at Decades is upbeat and welcoming, the service is fantastic, and I was impressed by how clean the whole place was (including the bathrooms, which I always appreciate!). And let me not forget—Decades’ specialty cocktails are excellent, making it the perfect spot for an evening drink with a friend or sweetheart. Whether you’re here for lunch, dinner, or just a drink, you won’t be disappointed, and that’s a Hip Grandma promise!

Tuscaloosa Restaurants with Delightful Dinners
Dreamland BBQ
Searching for a casual, off-the-beaten-path restaurant with some history and soul? You won’t find anything better than Dreamland BBQ. As a Northern girl, I’ve had my fair share of barbecue, but Dreamland gave me a new perspective on Southern-style ‘cue. Down here, the sauce isn’t the thick, sticky kind I’m used to—it’s more vinegar-based, tangy, and packed with flavor. And let me tell you, it’s absolutely delicious!
I was surprised when our server delivered a basket of plain white bread with a bowl of sauce for dipping. At first, I wasn’t sure what to think, but after one bite, I was hooked. Who knew something so simple could taste so amazing? Dreamland has been a local legend since 1958. After experiencing their tender ribs, flavorful sauce, and laid-back vibe, I completely understand why. If you’re looking for a tasty Southern tradition, this place will serve you up some serious comfort—and maybe even a new favorite barbecue style!

Urban Bar & Kitchen
After a day exploring downtown Tuscaloosa, head for Urban Bar and Kitchen. This lively spot is perfect for a fun and lively evening out, with great food, fantastic service, and a joyful atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.
One of the highlights of my visit? The cheesy grits. As a Northern girl, I don’t always get the chance to enjoy a good bowl of cheesy grits, but when I do, I snap them up, and let me tell you, these grits are some of the best I’ve had. I might just be a connoisseur of cheesy grits by now, and these definitely rank near the top of my list!
The service was fantastic, making the whole experience feel even more special. And if you’ve got a sweet tooth, don’t miss the Oreo cookie sundae—it’s the perfect dessert to share with your sweetie. Urban Bar and Kitchen will meet your expectations with a vibrant, cheerful atmosphere, whether you’re there for dinner or drinks.

Roll Call (in the Alamite)
When I visited Roll Call in downtown Tuscaloosa, located atop the stunning Alamite Hotel, I couldn’t help but be impressed by the sophisticated yet welcoming vibe of the whole place. Although the rooftop bar was closed during my visit, I managed to sneak a quick peek—and let me tell ya, the view from up there is delightful! I could already picture myself enjoying a drink while taking in the gorgeous sights of the city below.
Based on my hotel stay at the Alamite, I’d expect nothing less than top-notch food and service from Roll Call. Their menu features creative twists on classic Southern flavors. With an upscale and comfortable atmosphere, it’s just the place you’re looking for to enjoy a relaxing evening out or a special occasion. Next time, I’ll be sure to time my visit for when the rooftop bar is open—because that view, paired with great food and drinks, sounds like a winning combo!

The Lookout – Hotel Indigo Rooftop Restaurant
Speaking of rooftops, another Tuscaloosa Restaurant that I love is The Lookout atop Hotel Indigo. This IHG hotel is just a stone’s throw from the Mercedes-Benz Amphitheater, and offers an incredible rooftop experience with breathtaking views of the Black Warrior River.
The elevated location overlooks the riverbanks and the surrounding city. Though it’s near the raised highway, the noise is far enough away that it doesn’t disrupt the peaceful vibe. Instead, watching the cars zoom by while relaxing and enjoying the rooftop ambiance is dreamy. When I visited in the fall, heat lamps kept us warm and cozy in the cool autumn air. There’s even a comfortable seating area around a gas fire pit—perfect for intimate conversations and cocktails.
Whether you choose to relax on the rooftop with a drink in hand or head indoors for a change of scenery, the Lookout’s ambiance, with its combination of great views and cozy atmosphere, makes it the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring Tuscaloosa.

Southern Ale House – Dockside
Finally, I’m excited to tell you about Southern Ale House Dockside, Tuscaloosa County’s FIRST restaurant right on Lake Tuscaloosa, offering excellent service and food made with premium ingredients. Oh, and there’s a great view of the lake! Don’t confuse this dockside location with the original location on McFarland Blvd in Tuscaloosa. The original was so well-loved that they’ve added the Dockside location!
Whether you dine inside their inviting dining room or sit outside on the spacious patio with stunning lake views, you’re in for a treat. And if you’re out on the water, you can even drive your boat right up to the dock and walk a few steps to the restaurant—how cool is that? The family-friendly atmosphere makes it perfect for everyone.
I tried their chopped wedge salad (excellent!), a mouthwatering ribeye, and freshly fried pork skins for the first time—yum! The food is delicious, the service is top-notch, and the view of the lake makes every bite even better. It’s the perfect spot for a laid-back meal with a view.

Conclusion – Wrapping It All Up
A visit to Tuscaloosa is always a treat. But, seriously – the food options in this fantastic town are nothing short of mouthwatering. I promise you one thing. You will not go hungry when visiting the University of Alabama’s hometown. Just prepare yourself for an occasional and hearty “ROLL TIDE” while you’re in town, and you’ll soon feel like a local!
